May 2008

All of the news this week as about the high price of gas and good and about folks taking “staycations”…  where you stay at home instead of going somewhere. We did not plan on taking a “staycation” this weekend, but it worked out that way and it was wonderful. For once, we didn’t go somewhere for a three-day weekend or have guests. We went an say the new Indiana Jones flick (it was ok), went to a driving range, had dinner with friends, met a friend for coffee and had a little BBQ at home (including a grilled salad with blue cheese dressing – yum!).

I hope you and yours had a wonderful weekend. God bless our troops past and present, at home and abroad. Happy Memorial Day!

After several long conversations last week, hubbie decided to forgo starting at VA Tech, which was a huge disappointment. On the same day that he notified VA Tech of his decision, he contacted GWU and was spoke to the dean. She put him in direct contant with the math education POC and he has started the paperwork for the school. It look like he will be able to start as a “non-degree” canidate in July. It ends up being a five week delay. In the grand scheme of things… not so bad. In this program, he will be able to take courses whenever he likes. To boot, it is a less expensice program (almost by 1/2) and they seem far more organized.

We recently spent five nights in Antigua (pronounced ann-tee-gaa, which took us several days to get right). We stayed at the St. James Club.

It is located at a lovely point were the Atlantic Ocean meets Mamora Bay.
We spent most of our time on the resort reading, laying on the beach and eating… it was very relaxing and a huge change of pace for us.

The island is very scrubby – not a green and lush as we had imagined — but the water was so blue that it didn’t matter. Our room was on the Atlantic side of the resort with a great beach view and fantastic ocean breezes.

The resort was fine – not luxury – but very nice. The island is a former British colony, so the accents and the food were very British. One night they even served Yorkshire Pudding! The best part of the resort were the staff (so friendly and helpful) and the location. The food could use some improvement (think OK hotel banquet food for most meals) and the spa really could use a complete overhaul (dreary is the best description that I can come up with).

All in all — a very nice vacation — there are some pictures (mostly of the blue, blue water) available on Flicker… you can click on the link to the left or on the picture to see a little bit of our vacation.

My husband was supposed to start his Master’s program on Tuesday — a Masters in Secondary Education with a focus on math education. This is a significant career change and has been a long time in the making. So, his school decided on Friday at 3pm to send an email to all of the students in the program telling them that “due to budget constraints, course offerings at the Center are being curtailed. Nevertheless, it is our desire to provide a quality program within resource limitations. We plan to provide course work through Summer II, 2009. If you choose to pursue your master’s degree you need to complete the program no later than Summer II, 2009.”
What?!? They had to wait until a few days before classes to tell us this and AFTER WE PAID!  So, he is going to see if he can complete the program in time. But, based on other information provided, it may not be possible. So, we maybe back to square one looking at schools. On the bright side, we found another program that is at a very good school, closer to where he works and it may even be cheaper.

Cross your fingers for us that this will all work out in the end.

As I am sure everyone knows, there has been a massive earthquake in China. Several earthquake funds have been set up… If you are interested in donating, please consider the “Half the Sky Earthquake Fund”  The funds are going to support children in the most effected provinces.

The latest referrals are in… and it is a small batch (again!).

Congats to all of the new parents!!!!
