April 2008

Vietnam is closing to US adoptions due to an ”U.S. Embassy report that outlined rampant abuses, including hospitals selling infants whose mothers could not pay their bills, brokers scouring villages for babies and a grandmother who gave away her grandchild without telling the child’s mother”. “In a letter sent to the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi on Friday, Vietnam said it will stop taking adoption applications from American families after July 1 but will continue to process applications of families who are matched with babies before July 1.”

This is very sad for the prospective parents who are not going to have an opportunity to bring home their baby…

“Last week we attended the Annual Joint Council conference.  We met with other agencies working in China and the forecast isn’t good for the wait to decrease anytime soon.
I am sure many of follow the list serves but just in case I have attached the china talk info about current log in dates and referral times.

On April 4 referrals were sent out to families logged in January 9, 2006  -  these families waited almost 27 months.

No one at the meeting had a good answer to when would the wait get shorter and how much longer the wait would get.”

This was a really small batch of referrals. There is a lot of discussion on the web that the referral slowdown is due to the Olympics. To be honest, there seems to be no way to know if that is true. So, my husband and I just keep keep plugging along. I almost hate to say this, but I don’t think about the adoption half as much as I did a year ago. I think that may be a defense mechanism. So, what are we doing to keep busy? Well, B as baseball. He is a baseball glutton right now. I think he is trying to get as many games in as he can prior to starting his Master’s program in May. I am running to keep up with my client – I have been there six weeks and have about three to go. Then, I have to locate another role. I have had two formal delivlelrables and am helping with the contract recompete, that means after-hours and weekend work. Ugh!  Things should slow down to a more manageable pace soon. Hopefully, in time to enjoy the spring sunshine.

So, China has made it through 5 days worth of applications this month — until Jan 9, 2006. There are 8 months of applications ahead of ours.

On a brighter note — congrats to all of the new parents!

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush… or so they say. So, what about in a wall?
Earlier this week our two cats were both staring at a downstairs wall (in-between the living room and hall). I thought either they are crazy or there are ants (it is that time of year). I looked for ants — saw no ants– so I just assumed they were crazy.  So, I put on my coat, pick up my bag… and then heard a scratching noise. Coming from inside the wall — where the cats were sitting. They got all excited. I walk over to the wall and knock on it. More scratching….
So, I panic a little bit. I called my husband and told him that he had to come home because there was a LIVE animal in our wall.  While he was on his way home, I called several pest companies and one finally answered.  They came out to the house in the PM.  After cutting two holes in the drywall, they captured a full grown bird in our wall. The bird lived (it was a Starling). The wall is still scarred and so am I.
