January 2008

I am sure Dallas is a lovely town. I have been here for  going on three weeks and have seen the inside of a hotel and the inside of a meeting room. I am in intensive training and while it is great – it is exhausting and I haven’t see the sun light in over two weeks!  We did make it out for a team dinner at the Blue Goose Cantina  and a dive bar across the street which was fantastic fun. You haven’t played bar shuffle board until you played with a Scotsman, an Englishmen, two Colombian gents and a few Americans for good measure. It was quite a fun night!

There is about to be a Chinese language cartoon ala Dora the Explorer! I am very excited about this. What a fantastic teaching tool for us.

From the Nick Jr site — “Ni Hao, Kai-lan is a play-along, think-along series that weaves together Chinese language and culture, preschool-relatable stories, and interactivity, with Kai-lan as your intimate friend and playmate!”

It looks like slow is going to be the referral norm for the next several months.  Our agency provided the following update from a China contact today:

“At this time it is taking 24 months from your log in date to receive your referral.  The last group that received referrals in December were logged in on December 19, 2005. She stated that this pace will continue until after the August 2008 (Olympics).”

London is a great town!  I thought I would post a short overview of what we liked (and didn’t like).

Best…

Church: Westminster Abbey. It is awe inspiring. When you think about who has worshiped here and who is buried here it is truly amazing. They began building the church in 1245.

Museum: British Museum. This place has the Rosetta Stone! And the Elgin Marbles! And…. you get the picture. It house the world’s history in a city block. It is incredible.

Site: London Eye. Yes, it is a large Ferris Wheel. Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it is a gimmick. Yes, we loved it. It offered incredible view of the city.

Food: There are many great restaurants. One of our favor things to do was to pick up a picnic much from Marks and Spencer Food. We also loved the Chocolate Digestive Biscuits - yum!

Pub: They all have their charm. We liked The Marquis Of Cornwallis.

Our London Vacation Flat: We are biased. We loved staying in a flat. It was in a great location and it was lovely. The owners were helpful and very, very nice.  Click here for more info on the flat.

Worst…

Cost!  With the US Dollar being so low, everything from coffee to souvenirs were very expensive. Though, we did shop a bit in Harrods.

Crowds! We arrived on Boxing Day and left on New Years Day. We thought we had a great idea to travel over the holiday — as did half of the world. Everything was busy.

Closings!  Many of London’s charming little pubs and restaurants were closed from Christmas Eve until after New Years. The owners and staff were all on vacation.

I’ll post some pictures later.

Well, they next batch of referrals is out – 12/19/2005. That’s right folks… a four day batch. It is a little disheartening.

We arrived home late last night after a wonderful week in London. More on that later… but first, kudos on Air Canada. We flew through Montreal in a “little bit” of snow (ah…. DC would have been closed for a week with the amount of snow on the ground). Not only did they get us only an hour late, they did it with humor (after most of the other airlines cancelled flights).

Happy New Year to all… may you have a wonderful year!
